After sporting the Celtics pair the other day, you know I had to bust out the DMP Air Jordan 1 Bred ASAP! This would be the other half of the “Defining Moments Package” that I mentioned in the last review.
The black and red pair was probably the more sought after of the two pairs that came in the pack, although that may have changed seeing as there have been many retros of the Bred 1s but the Celtics 1s have only released the one time. The defining moment referenced in the pack is a send up to Michael Jordan hitting 63 points against the Celtics in 1986. The kicks have the date of the game printed inside the tongue and come in a special pull-out drawer box. The jumpman on the tongue ensures these don’t have the hype of an OG High retro with Nike Air.
Air Jordans in black and red look great in black and red outfits. I’m not a fan of matching up things like that, but Jordan retros in Bulls colorways are the exception to the rule. That said, some light wash denim and a white tee also works. At the end of the day, these shoes in particular go with just about anything! AJ1s are definitely a versatile shoe in terms of how you can rock them, and this contributes to their popularity.
How Are The Materials?
Crappy leather is what you get with these. It creases quick and looks a little weird as it ages, but still, it’s a pair of Bred 1s! These things aren’t about awesome materials, it’s about having that nice high cut and that classic colorway. That’s why these are still fairly pricey on the second hand market – the importance of this shoe and this colorway aren’t going anywhere. Even if Nike released a pair damn near made out of cardboard, people would still pay through the nose to own a pair of Bred 1s.
How Do They Fit?
The DMP Air Jordan 1 Bred fit true to size but also really narrow and a tad uncomfortable. Again, just like most 1s, these are more about the look and the colorway than they are about an accurate fit. The shoe has no technology to it, just leather on top of rubber, and the shoe first dropped in 1985 when there were limited choices on basketball sneakers and having the best performing sneaker was an afterthought to just having a signature basketball shoe, period.
